Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a one of the most common pathologies in the pediatric urology department. After the first episode of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children, the VUR incidence varies between 20 and 40%. The objective of the present work was to analyze the clinical characteristics of primary VUR in a population of infants and the results of surgical treatment. A descriptive observational study was performed on 373 children from January 2001 to June 2007. The median age at presentation was 22,3 months, 240 (64,3%) were females, 147 (39,4%) had history of one UTI episode, 173 (46,4%) had history of more than one episode and 53 (14,2%) did not have history of UTI at presentation VUR was bilateral in 161 cases (43,2%). Renal scars were present at presentation in 72 patients (19,3%). When we divided children in 3 groups according to birth date, we could observe that the children who had been  born more recently, had significantly less age at presentation, less renal scars and they needed less surgical treatment. This type of treatment was indicated in 163 patients (43,7%) and after surgery persistence was detected in 8 cases (5,0%). The present work demonstrated that renal scarring has significantly diminished over the study period due to an earlier diagnosis and this has contributed to less necessity of surgical treatment. When surgical procedures were carried out to repair VUR, the results were similar to those reported by current literature.
