PEREZ, Walter; DECIA, Mónica; GUZZO, Florencia  and  MONTANO, Alicia. Gastroenteritis aguda en lactantes: Admisión en el Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell 2006-2007. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2011, vol.82, n.1, pp.4-9. ISSN 1688-1249.

Introduction: children's acute diarrhea is a prevalent disease that stands as a major health problem throughout the world as a cause of malnutrition and infant mortality. This pathology has presented a marked decline in deaths in our country since 1997. The Department of Pediatrics of the Central Hospital Pereira Rossell implemented an acute diarrhea unit in 2004, which passed the application of standards of care, control and evaluation of the impact of this disease. Objectives: describe the clinical characteristics of children admitted to the CHPR, with surveillance of this pathology. Methodology: descriptive and retrospective. We included all children under 36 months with acute diarrhea between 1/1/2006 to 12/31/2007. Data was extracted from the computer system of the Department of Pediatrics and revision histories in the Department of medical records of the CHPR. Results: acute diarrhea was the cause of hospitalization of 2.7% and 2.4% respectively of all admissions in 2006 and 2007. The median age of the children was 6 months. Of 289 registered children 71 patients (25%) were diarrhea disenteriforme, representing the most common reason for income. Shock was featured as income in 14 patients (5%) and in 8 patients (SIRS) systemic inflammatory response syndrome. 21% of cases were positive for rotavirus., 4.5% for adenovirus and 3% for both studies. No deaths were found for this cause. Discussion: most children entering for this disease are less than 1 year old. The most common reason for income was the presence of blood in the stool. In most cases the causative agent was not isolated, rotavirus ranked first. There is a marked reduction of income from gastroenteritis I. No deaths were found for this cause in the analyzed period.
