Abstract
MUSLERA, Andrea et al. Análisis y seguimiento de las consultas por síncope en la emergencia pediátrica. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2009, vol.80, n.1, pp.17-22. ISSN 1688-1249.
Summary: Introduction: syncope is a common symptom in children and adolescents. It involves loss of consciousness and postural tone with spontaneous and complete recovery. Objectives: to know the epidemiological characteristics of children who consult for syncope in the pediatric emergency. To identify the causes and types of syncope. Materials and methods: a descriptive, prospective non-interventionist study was made with patients who consulted for syncope in the pediatric emergency between January and December 2005. Results: 99 patients aged between 0 and 14 years old were analyzed, with an average of 11. Most of them were female. 65% had prodromal. The standing position prevailed. Precipitating causes were present in 31%. The awakening was alert in 62%. Previous episodes of syncope were present in 33%. The atmosphere was considered favourable by 14%. Personal history of cardiovascular disease, seizures and sob spasms, plus a family history of syncope, arrhythmia, sudden death, congenital heart disease and myocardial infarction were analyzed. An electrocardiogram was performed. The suspicion of prolonged QTC done by pediatricians occurred in 11 children and was not corroborated by the cardiac team. Only one electrocardiogram was pathological. Performing glycemia and hematocrit studies did not show any benefit. The most frequent diagnosis was neurocardiogenic syncope. Conclusions: the epidemiology of our population corresponds with that of literature analyzed like the type of syncope that prevailed. Although a normal electrocardiogram does not discard definitively the neurocardiogenic reason, it turns out to be a very adviser instrument.
