CAMMARATA-SCALISI, Francisco et al. Carcinoma de tiroides en niños y adolescentes. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2008, vol.79, n.2, pp.120-124. ISSN 0004-0584.
Thyroid carcinoma is not frequent in the first two decades of life. It is estimated that 10% of the total cases of thyroid carcinoma occur within this age range. There is a female predominance and the majority the papillary type. Clinical and pathological characteristics of 11 patients with thyroid cancer under 20 years of age were studied: studies showed the papillary type in all of them. There is a female predominance with a ratio of 2.67:1. All patients underwent surgical treatment; additionally eight patients were treated with 131iodine. The survival rate was 70 % after 4.6 years. The presentation and outcome of thyroid carcinoma in pediatric patients differs from that in adults requiring a multidisciplinary treatment.
