BONINO, Anna et al. Malformaciones congénitas: incidencia y presentación clínica. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2006, vol.77, n.3, pp.225-228. ISSN 1688-1249.

Congenital malfomations constitute an emerging problem in developing countries due to the fact that other causes are being controlled. Uruguay occupies the third place in Latin America and the Caribbean. The objective of this work was to determine the incidence of congenital malformation in the maternity area at the British Hospital and to analyze its main characteristics. A retrospective study of the newborn’s clinical records was realized from January 1, 2003 until June 31, 2005. The incidence was of 12/1.000 live births. The most frequent malformations were related to the genitourinary system, heart disease, skeletal malformations and less frequent defects of the digestive and central nervous system. In 10 children a major malformation was observed and four patients presented malformation associations. In half of the pregnancies prenatal ultrasonography was useful for the diagnosis. The frequency found was lower than that reported by ECLAMC for our country
