Resumen

CAMPO-ARIAS, ADALBERTO et al. Percepción de rendimiento académico y síntomas depresivos en estudiantes de media vocacional de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2005, vol.76, n.1, pp.21-26. ISSN 1688-1249.

Background: academic achievement (AA) is influenced by several factors. The relationship between clinically significant depressive symptoms (CSDS) and AA has not been established among high school students from Bucaramanga, Colombia. Objective: establishing the association between CSDS and AA among high school adolescent students from Bucaramanga, Colombia. Methods: five hundred sixty 15-19 year-old students responded anonymously the self-report VESPA questionnaire of The Epidemiological Surveillance Improper Substance Use. The VESPA questionnaire includes a item for reporting last month academic achievement. CSDS were measured with Zung’s self-report rating scale for depression. The association was determined performing logistic regression. Results: CSDS prevalence was 39,5%. RA was reported as excellent by 114 students (20,4%), as good by 255 (45,5%), as fair by 137 (24,5%), and as poor by 54 (9,6%). Fair and poor AA was associated with CSDS (OR 1,72, 95%CI 1,16-2,56), alcohol dependence pattern (OR 2,34, 95%IC 1,08-5,08), and tobacco smoking (OR 1,36, 95%CI 1,09-1,71). Conclusions: reporting CSDS is related to AA. High CSDS scores predict poor AA. It is so important to establish causal relationship between CSDS an AA among adolescent students. Early identification high CSDS students may improve AA among Colombian adolescent students.
