Abstract

MORAES, MARIO  and  BUSTOS, RAÚL. Ictericia grave en el recién nacido sano. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2004, vol.75, n.2, pp.139-141. ISSN 1688-1249.

We present the case of a female newborn, 35 weeks of gestational age, who is readmitted to hospital on her sixth day of life due to jaundice. The newborn had a blood test showing a total serum bilirubin of 32,52 mg/dl which was attributed to an insufficient hydration, without demonstrable hemolysis. With intensive phototherapy bilirubin is reduced with no neurological sequelae. We discuss the increasing frequency of similar cases, the ethiology and present an update of the therapeutical options, mainly phototherapy.

Keywords :  JAUNDICE; HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA;  PHOTOTHERAPY;  INFANT, NEWBORN.
