Abstract

Evolución de la mortalidad en el Hospital Pediátrico del Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell en el período 1999-2002: Informe del Comité de Auditoría de Fallecidos. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2003, vol.74, n.3, pp.212-218. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary Knowledge about causes and features of children who die in a hospital are an important issue in order to improve quality of health care and prevent evitable deaths. With these objectives, during 2002 a Death Auditory Committee began to work in the Pediatric Hospital of Pereira Rossell Hospital Center. This Committee was integrated by pediatricians and pathologist from the Pediatric Direction, the General Clinics, the Intensive Care Unit, and the Pediatric Emergency and the Pediatric Pathology Departments. Methodology: systematic analysis of clinical files and necropsy results of all children who died in the Pediatric Hospital, was performed. Death causes were classified according to CIE 10. Results: between 1999 and 2002, number of annual deaths was 118, 108, 119 and 100 respectively. Most of these children were from Montevideo and Canelones. Between 14,8 and 26,8 % died during the first 24 hours . In every year most of the children were less than 1 year old. The main cause of death was infectious diseases in children under 5 years of age and malignancies and accidents in older children . An increasing tendency in necropsy solicitude by medical doctors but not in parents consent was observed. Conclusion and proposals: Death Auditory Committee has signified an improvement for the Hospital but it is still far from reaching the planned objectives. Activities to improve medical staff and Committee members on these subjects are proposed. Inter-relation with other institutions must increase. Emphasis on Promotion and Prevention Programs related to prevalent diseases in children is recommended
