Resumen

Investigación de virus respiratorios en niños menores de dos años hospitalizados por infección respiratoria aguda baja. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2003, vol.74, n.3, pp.176-181. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary The acute lower respiratory infections are the most frequently cause of hospitalization in the first years of life. This matter has to be consider as priority for its implications in the children´s morbidmortality. Due to this, there is necessary to obtain more information related to this pathology, so as to develop helpful strategies and at the same time, improving the efficiency of the resources of health. Among May 1st and November 3rth, 1998, 182 children less than two years old were studied, they had entered to the pediatric clinics of the Pereira Rossell Hospital Center and their diagnoses were sharp respiratory infections probably due to viral etiology. Some samples were obtained of aspired nasofaringeos for investigation of viral antigens by indirect imnufluorescense. The inmuno-fluorescense was positive in the 53,3% of the cases. The predominant Respiratory Virus was the Sincicial (83.5%), then the Influenza A (6.2%) and the Adenovirus (5.2%). Also 4 cases that associates Sincicial Respiratory Virus and Influenza (4,1%) as well as one case of Adenovirus and Sincicial Respiratory Virus (1.0%) were found. The group of children with positive inmunofluorescense was compared to the ones that had negative inmunofluorescense not finding any statistically significant differences in none of the compared aspects (radiological finds, antibiotics used and others). There were four cases of nosocomial infections and no deaths were registered. It is important to emphasize that a quick, sensitive and specific technique for virological diagnosis is required. The technique will help to perform a program for hospitalization, diagnostic and treatment to rationalize the use of antibiotics and to reduce the rate of nosocomial infections
