Abstract

PERDOMO, VIRGINIA  and  BERNADA, MERCEDES. Estudio de hermanos de niños portadores de reflujo vésico-ureteral. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2002, vol.73, n.1, pp.5-9. ISSN 1688-1249.

Introduction: vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) is found in near 1/3 of children with urinary tract infection (UTI). It is a genetically inherited illness. Bibliography says that siblings of children with VUR, have between 27-46% of risk of having it themselves. Objective: to know the incidence of VUR in siblings of children with it, included in a UTI research. Material and method: a prospective and descriptive study was done. There were included all of the siblings of children with VUR, enclosed in the UTI research, carried out between 18/08/1999 and 18/08/2000 in Pediatric Clinic B (CHPR). Inform consent was required. Each sibling was studied with: urine analysis, bacteriurie and renal ultrasound. Retrograde cistouretrography was also done to children under 3 years, and to those with previous UTI or pathologic findings at the ultrasound. Results: 9 children with VUR were included (index cases) and 17 siblings. Every authorization was obtained (n = 17). Ages were between 3 months and 16 years. 1/17 ultrasounds were pathologic: vesical diverticulous, 2/8 (11,76%) cystographies were pathologic: 2 girls (9 months and 2 years), with G II vesico-ureteral reflux. Conclusions: it is to point up, the excellent acceptance of parents to study healthy children at hospital field. The amount of children with VUR founded (11,76%) was lower to that observed by other researchers. Probably this depends on sample size and methodological differences. It is to emphasize the importance of founding VUR in children before UTI episodes.
