Urinary tract infection is a common cause of medical consult and hospital admission in pediatrics. Treatment is directed to: bacterial erradication, symptons relief, avoid septic complications and prevent renal damage. Antimicrobial choice must be supported on local epidemiologic surveys about etiology and antibiotic sensitivity. Objectives: to search for: 1) main etiologies, 2) etiology variability according to age and sex, 3) main pathogens sensitivity. Methods: a prospective study was done during a year. There were included children with clinical suspicious of urinary tract infection, confirmed with significative bacteriuria according to urine sampling techniques. Antibiotic sensitivity of most frequently used drugs was studied. Cefuroxime was used for treatment. Results and conclutions: 81 patients were included: 58 from Montevideo, 23 from Salto and Flores, 56 girls and 25 boys. 102 urine cultures were examined, from different infection episodes. Escherichia coli was isolated in 73,5%, Proteus in 8,8%, Klebsiella in 6,8%. E. coli has predominated at every age. There was more etiology variability in boys. It was found: high resistances to ampicilina, cefradina and trimetropim sulfametoxasol and high sensitivity to gentamicina and cefuroxime. Cefuroxime used was adequate to sensitivities found.
