Introduction: there is scientific evidence of a direct relationship between alimentary habits and customs and oral health.                                                                                      Objective: the Department of Dentistry for Children proposed the identification of certain habits and behaviour in the choosing of Uruguayan families and children diet that influence the health-illness process.          Methods: to that end, a survey was conducted among children that were treated at the Department’s clinic by 1998 fifth year grade students.                                                   Results: the results of the survey are herewith presented, with certain particular diet-related behaviours of Uruguayans which have a notorious impact on oral health being highlighted.                                                           Conclusions: special emphasis is given to the importance that health professionals should have a deep knowledge of this subject to establish strategies for health promotion and education.
