Abstract

An exploratory study was carried out, with a sample of 307 cases, in four Handicapped Schools. A protocol, the reliability of which was intended to verify, was used as an instrument. The objectives stated were: to evaluate the psychiatric situation of the population and diagnosis process, previous to its income; to draw conclusions and proposals. The following conclusions were drawn from the results obtained: the diagnosis process followed for the insertion of the children in the schools was inadequate in a high percentage; a considerable percentage of these children could function properly in normal schools, this demands reformulation of the criteria used to decide the income to special schools; it could be necessary to apply, to the whole population of handicapped, a similar study, thus allowing to apply uniform criteria in mental health policies; the instrument used seems reliable, but it would need certain changes for its further application.
