Diabetes is a highly prevalent disease that has become a true pandemia. It is characterized by complex metabolic alterations including the development of hyperglycemia. In the long term micro- and macrovascular complications occur. Arterial atheromatous disease explains three quarters of diabetic deaths. Life-style changes, with increased physical activity and smoking cessation, can markedly reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Adequate blood pressure and lipid levels control have a strong positive impact to that end. This paper tries to summarize the available evidence and to make recommendations for the clinical management of diabetic patients.
