RODRIGUEZ, Cristina; DOTTI, Gabriela y CUESTA, Alejandro. Prevalencia de tabaquismo y sedentarismo en un grupo extenso de enfermeros de Montevideo: relación con edad, sexo y múltiple empleo. Rev.Urug.Cardiol. [online]. 2014, vol.29, n.2, pp.200-205. ISSN 1688-0420.
Smoking in health personnel affects the whole community. Physical inactivity is a recognized risk factor. Our objective was to characterize the prevalence of smoking and physical inactivity in a non-random sample of nurses from Montevideo, discriminating by gender, age and existence of multiple employment (ME). Methods: a form with closed questions was developed. We defined: smoker; if he smoked in the last 6 months, Sedentary; if performed <150 minutes/week of exercise, ME; if used to work 12 hours/day or more. We took a nonrandom convenience sample, which included 1620 nurses. Results: we found ME in 56.8% of nurses <31 years, 68.7% between 31-40 years, 63.3% between 41-50 years and 47.3% at> 50 years (p<0.001). ME was higher in men than in women (72.8% vs. 57.1%, p<0.001). The smoker prevalence was 39.8%, with no difference between genders, with higher prevalence in> 50 years (45%, p=0.007). The prevalence of sedentary was 79.9%, higher in women than men (83.4% vs. 69.9%, p<0.001) and higher in > 50 years (86.4% p=0.013). There were more sedentary among those with ME (81.6 vs. 77.3%, p=0.002). In multivariate analysis the differences remained significant. Only 14.6% of all nonsmokers and were sedentary. Conclusions: in this group of nurses from Montevideo smoking prevalence was 39.8%, higher than reported for the whole country and without gender difference. Prevalence of sedentary was 79.9%. It affected more women, >50 years of age and those with ME. The prevalence of ME was 61.1%, higher than reported up to date.
