Summary Introduction: non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the Americas. To monitor their risk factors is an essential component to the strategy to control them. This study aimed to characterize the situation of those in a large unselected population of our country. Methods: we analyzed blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids, smoking and body mass index of those who carried out the health card at the Department of Preventive Medicine between 2008 and 2011, which was made from the electronic clinical record. The prevalence of different risk factors is reported age-adjusted. Results: we included 74,420 individuals (mean age 36.0 years, women 51%) observing: hypertension 30.5%, diabetes 6.8%, hypercholesterolemia 30.3%, smoking 23.2% and overweight 55.2%. Forty seven point five percent of hypertensive and 49.7% of diabetics did not know they were. A 27.1% of hypertensive patients had pressure <140/90 mmHg, and 14.4% of diabetic patients had blood glucose <110 mg/dl. Conclusions: in a large population of working age individuals we founded high prevalence of risk factors, and little knowledge of possess them of inadequate of control of them, implying a significant risk of developing NCDs. Although the tobacco use has diminished, it is necessary to strengthen control measures to decrease it among young people. Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity is necessary to further policies to modify its evolution.
