The study of diastolic function must be part of daily practice in the echo lab. The echocardiographic study of patients with heart failure, secondary to systolic or diastolic dysfunction, or both, would be incomplete without diastolic evaluation. It is as well of primary importance in the evaluation of patients with other entities, such as those with resctrive or constrictive pathology. In this article, we will exclusively refer to the study of patients with pure diastolic heart failure or with predominantly diastolic heart failure. We will not include those with systolic heart failure nor mention the prognostic value of diastolic function in different clinical scenarios or its treatment. The aim of this article is to give the clinical cardiologist and the echocardiographer practical tools to study this clinical entity in a practical and easy way.
