Introduction:

patient participation in health technology assessment (HTA) is essential for informed and inclusive decision-making. However, civil society plays a limited role in these processes, creating a gap between scientific evidence and clinical practice.

Objective:

to explore patients’ knowledge and experiences regarding health technologies and their interest in HTA.

Materials and method:

exploratory study using an online survey distributed by convenience and snowball sampling. Understanding, expectations, and experiences with technologies were analyzed, as well as familiarity with HTA agencies and willingness to participate in assessment processes.

Results:

a total of 324 people (aged 18–85) participated. Safety and coverage were the most valued aspects. Only 61% were aware of international HTA agencies, and 20% knew of Uruguay’s Health Technology Assessment Agency (AETSU). One third reported receiving insufficient information about recommended technologies, and 40% felt their perspectives were not considered in the indication. Nonetheless, most expressed interest in participating in HTA.

Conclusions:

there is low awareness of health technologies and their assessment, but high interest in participating. Communication and education strategies are needed to promote inclusive processes.
