DE HEVIA, Joan Obrador et al. Association between alcohol consumption and other variables with the values of different obesity risk scales in Spanish workers: retrospective study 2009-2019. Rev. Méd. Introduction:
obesity is a major issue in most countries worldwide, as it significantly increases the prevalence of various health conditions. Different factors contribute to its development. The objective of this study is to assess how various sociodemographic variables and healthy habits are associated with the prevalence of obesity.
Materials and methods:
two studies were conducted: the first was a cross-sectional study involving 139,634 workers, and the second was a retrospective longitudinal study with a subgroup of 40,431 workers. The study evaluates the association between age, gender, social class, educational level, tobacco and alcohol consumption, physical activity, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet with the prevalence of obesity, determined by four different scales.
Results:
all analyzed variables show an association with obesity, with an observed increase in risk among individuals who consume alcohol, are sedentary, have low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and are of advanced age.
Conclusions:
the profile of a person at high risk of obesity is likely to be an older male, with a low socioeconomic level, who smokes, regularly consumes alcohol, is sedentary, and has low adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
