CARBONI, Diana Electra Domenech e STROZZI SCALA, Daniel. First validated instrument in Uruguay for assessing therapeutic adherence in hypertensive individuals. Year 2017. Rev. Méd. Urug. [online]. 2024, vol.40, n.4, e205. Epub 26-Nov-2024. ISSN 0303-3295. https://doi.org/10.29193/rmu.40.4.5.
Introduction:
Arterial hypertension is one of the most significant cardiovascular risk factors in the country, not only due to its prevalence but also because of its inadequate control. Poor therapeutic adherence has been identified as a determining factor in this regard. Although there is no gold standard for measuring adherence, questionnaires are a reasonable indirect method to approach this complex phenomenon. The Martín-Bayarre-Grau questionnaire evaluates adherence to various therapeutic aspects of the disease: diet, physical activity, medication, and health check-ups. To date, there is no validated instrument in Uruguay for evaluating adherence to antihypertensive treatment.
Objective:
To assess the psychometric properties, factorial analysis, and reliability of the Martín-Bayarre-Grau Questionnaire in patients with arterial hypertension in Uruguay.
Method:
Quantitative study based on qualitative and factorial analysis of the questionnaire, implemented in a convenience sample of hypertensive patients over 50 years old, users of an urban and rural health service at the first level of care of the Paysandú Medical Corporation.
Results:
The study included 125 participants: 26,4% from rural areas and 73,6% from urban areas; 63,2% were women, with a mean age of 64,82 years, and 56% were retirees. The qualitative and factorial analysis revealed reasonable, well-defined, justified, and feasible items, with a Cronbach’s alpha index of 0,717 and a variance of 62,954% explained by four factors.
Conclusions:
This study presents a tool evaluated in a non-probabilistic sample, demonstrating content validity, logical construction, reasonableness, reliability, and a theoretical construct that proposes categories comprehensively expressing the phenomenon of therapeutic adherence.
