Resumen

CONTI DIAZ, Ismael A. A propósito del centenario del descubrimiento de la paracoccidioidomicosis. Principales hitos de la evolución de su conocimiento con especial énfasis en las contribuciones científicas nacionales. Rev. Méd. Urug. [online]. 2010, vol.26, n.1, pp.45-50. ISSN 1688-0390.

Summary In 2008 was the centennial anniversary of the discovery of paracoccidioidomycosis (former South American blastomycosis), a serious systemic mycosis and an essentially relapsing one affecting Mexico, Central America -with the exception of Nicaragua- and in particular the South American continent, especially Brazil. Our country is part of this condition’s endemic area with 77 cases reported until 1997. The present study constitutes a much needed reminder as well as an updated analysis of the subsequent scientific progress, in terms of knowing about the main etiological, clinical-epidemiological, and etiopathogenic aspects and the parasite-host interrelationships, diagnosis and therapy of the disease, among other milestones. An emphasis is made on the contributions by the Uruguayan School of Medical Mycology, presided by Professor Juan E. Mackinnon, particularly those concerning the final explanation/clarification of the pathogenesis of this condition, which is currently unanimously accepted and was made through original lab experiences with animals. Different national studies were also relevant, as is the case of the study of the structural and biological characteristics of the etiological agent, knowledge about the mycosis epidemiology in the country and the determination of the influence and effects of different environment temperatures on the disease in lab animal experiences, among others.
