LAPHITZ, Claudia; ASSANDRI, Elizabeth; FERREIRA MAIA, Alicia  and  FERRARI, Ana María. Derivación de pacientes pediátricos a unidades de cuidados intensivos: estudio de cuatro años en una institución de asistencia médica colectiva. Rev. Méd. Urug. [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.3, pp.215-221. ISSN 1688-0390.

Summary The paper describes the characteristics of a pediatric population (n = 214), user of the Centro de Asistencia del Sindicato Mèdico del Uruguay (CASMU), referred to intensive care units from January 1st 1998 to December 31st 2001. The mean age of the population was 38 + 3.8 months and the median age 23 months. Fifty three percent (53.27%) of the population presented previous pathologies. Respiratory diseases associated with infectious etiology were the primary cause of admission to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and main cause of mortality. Of the admitted patients, 23.8% needed mechanical ventilation. Total length of intensive care unit stay was 1 558 days. Mean length of intensive care unit stay was 7 days and 6 hours and the median was 3 days. Mortality rates of this population was 7%. Necropsy was performed in 5 patients. Further studies to assess effectiveness of intensive care unit should be done.
