Summary The paper analyzes social determinants as causing factor of car accidents in Uruguay. Institutional attitudes and socio-cultural and market directions are analyzed using multicausal hierarchy model. On this basis, the binomial-equation alcohol-traffic is investigated from a social medical point of view. Alcohol is taken as a social drug and is an indicator (vector) of car accidents worldwide. The study comprises the analysis of 371 car accidents occurred from 1995 to 2002 (many years later than bill 16.585, that regulates alcohol-traffic norms), where alcohol was involved. The aim of the study is to determine some conclusions about the social aspects more influent and the causes that provoke car accidents. The transversal and observational study used secondary data of a sample coming from an insurance company record. The percent of alcoholometric tests taken was low, alcoholemia rates were high and time between accident and alcoholemia was long. Causes related to social and community structures are determinant in causing car accidents in the country, and more prevalent than immediate causes.
