Abstract

TURNES, Antonio L; CIRIACOS, Calíope María  and  RODRIGUEZ ALMADA, Hugo. Mortalidad de los médicos en Uruguay (primera parte) 1974 - 2002. Características demográficas. Rev. Méd. Urug. [online]. 2003, vol.19, n.3, pp.216-224. ISSN 1688-0390.

Summary A descriptive, retrospective and transversal study on both demographic characteristics and specialities of physicians dead in Uruguay from 1974 to 2002. Data was obtained from national medical records at the Sindicato Médico del Uruguay (Padrón Médico Nacional del Sindicato Médico del Uruguay. Comparing to life expectancy at birth (EVN), age of death was significantly lower. Age death was different considering sexes; out of 247 women and 1.525 men (n = 1.772), 50% women died before 60 years old comparing to 25% men. All indicators showed mortality age lower in women than in men. In relation to specialities, they all showed the same pattern: always woman death age was lower than man death age. Anesthesiologists and cardiologists died the youngest. Further informantion is needed, the same as identifying surgeons as a group risk and the above-mentionded specialities in order to design prevention strategies.
