Abstract

BRENA, Valentina. Underlying phenomena of the Afro-Uruguayan candombe. Antropol. soc. cult. Urug. [online]. 2015, vol.13, pp.51-64. ISSN 1510-3846.

This article is the result of an ethnography on the Afro-Uruguayan candombe conducted during 2013 and 2014 in the south, east and west of Uruguay from an African-referenced methodology. Contemporary candombe lives popularization and nationalization processes. In this context, and cultural processes to be read in different keys, we stop to analyze the experiences according to ethno-racial ancestry of the performers. We have identified mechanisms of racial discrimination present in this manifestation of African matrices; analyze the impacts of secularizing process and religious racism on the performance of candombe, and finally, from a gender-decolonial perspective, we approach the positions that men and women occupy in such representation

Keywords : candombe; racism; ethno-racial ancestry; gender; religiousness.
