ABSTRACT This essay is a reflection around the urban change that is seen in the neighborhood of La Boca (Buenos Aires). It argues that this change addresses three different but related impulses: the aesthetic impulse, the leveler impulse, and the sanitizer one. It argues that in addition to modifying the appearance of this particular neighborhood, the three pulses are powerful metaphors for what happens there on a social level. The writing interweaves ethnographic work done in the field since 2010 with theoretical considerations from the field of anthropology of cities. Although, it isn´t strictly an academic ar-ticle because it includes disquisitions arising from my status as a citizen and resident of La Boca.
