ABSTRACT This article is a synthesis of several ethnographic investigations performed since 2007 to this time in different locations of Montevideo and his Metropolitan Area. First, we expose the line of research on city, communication and spatiality in the context of urban cultural studies, within which we focus on ethnography of dwelling and processes of subjectivation. Later, we collect the main contributions of three investigations: in the metropolitan area, in the zone most paradigmatic of the periphery, and in an urban interstice, very significant in the consolidated city. Then, we outline the principal objectives to the next investigation ongoing about creation and design of new dwellings, from a social housing plan. We conclude with central aspects of a type of spatial dynamic of contemporary Montevideo, attempting to extract general considerations about theory of dwelling, city and the urban thing.
