This article describes, synthesizes and analyzes the dynamics of the internal conflict in the main Uruguayan trade union organization, the Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT), between 1983 and 2023. Three main historical stages of conflict are established, each of which corresponds to a certain structure of factionalism that orders the internal discussion, characterizing the different groups that compete for the representation of the group of workers, their discourses, identities and mutual relations. It concludes by affirming the existence of basic fissures that produce identities and dynamics of internal competition in different periods, highlighting the change and continuity in the role of political parties in said order.
