The urban concentration of consumption and advances in technology have led to longer, more centralized food supply chains. In response, short food supply chains (SFSC) have gained prominence. This article analyzes the experience of SFSC in Florianópolis’ region, Brazil, based on relationships between farmers and consumers using social technologies for direct food sales. It contrasts principles and practices of reciprocity and commodification, understood as factors that condition economic dynamics. It concluded that reciprocity and commercialization coexist in the CCCs studied, as complementary dimensions in economic and social relations, residing the challenge of balancing these principles without compromising inclusion, well-being and sustainability of initiatives.
