Specificity of the Argentine Pampas Agricultural Space: A Review of Perspectives and an Approach Based on Multiple Modernities

The Argentine Pampas agricultural space has often been characterized in relation to the notion of modernization, a concept that has nonetheless been assigned multiple meanings. This paper aims to critically examine that concept, first through a synthetic review of the main interpretations of the modernization process as applied to the characterization of the Argentine Pampas agricultural space. Second, it proposes an alternative reading based on the idea of multiple modernities, that is, understanding modernization as a general principle capable of taking on a plurality of alternative forms. In this context, the paper proposes a characterization of this space as the product of the combination of three alternative forms of modernization: the baroque, the familial-communitarian, and the Enlightenment-naturalist.
