Abstract

PINHEIRO, Diógenes  and  ESTEVES, Luiz Carlos Gil. Profile of young Brazilians. New and old challenges for the reconstruction of public policies. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2024, vol.37, n.54, e203.  Epub June 01, 2024. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v37i54.3.

What are the main characteristics of young Brazilians today? Guided by this question, the study presents the sociodemographic data that make up the profile of youth in the country. Based on interviews with 1,740 young people aged 15 to 29 years in the second half of 2019 in the five regions of Brazil, the study integrates the national section of an Iberoamerican research that also involved Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Peru and the Dominican Republic. Hoping to contribute to subsidize the public policies for youth in times of reconstruction, the portrait is drawn, among other marks, of an impoverished youth, who does not work, religious and predominantly evangelical/protestant, of black color/race, low education, and quite dependent on the family.

Keywords : Brazilian youth; public policies; sociodemographic characteristics; sociology of youth.
