This article analyzes the changes in labor relations systems in Brazil and Colombia, that are both marked by structures inherited from systems rooted in slave labor, as well as profound regional differences. These shared characteristics allow us to analyze together the contradictions between labor and capital when center and center-left governments were in power during the early years of the 21st century. In the case of Brazil, after over a decade of advances, a shift to the right has provoked many setbacks with regards to both individual and collective labor rights. In the case of Colombia, the shift to the center opened up political space for democratic conflict resolution, although there was continuity with regards to neoliberal economic policies. This shift ended with the election of a far-right government. In the context of intensified labor conflicts, union revitalization is necessary to guarantee the preservation of labor rights as well as to advocate for a new cycle of positive changes, with the possibility of a new shift to the left now in the political horizon.
