Abstract

RIELLA, Alberto  and  RAMIREZ, Jessica. The uruguayan agricultural sector. Transitional workers and social vulnerability. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.49, pp.89-116.  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v34i49.4.

The demand for work in the agricultural sector is determined by a seasonal labor requirement, deepened by the flexibility of production processes and forms of recruitment. This creates a growing quota of workers, which has no chance of fully employing the sector during the annual working cycle. The article presents a conceptualization of transitional work in the agricultural sector, and shows the relevance of the social vulnerability approach to analyze the living and working conditions of this group. Then operationalizes the concept of labor transience, outlines the findings of the research and shows the need for social visibility of this group.

Keywords : agricultural work; transitory employment; occupational vulnerability; social vulnerability.
