Abstract

BOGO CHIES, Luiz Antônio  and  ROTTA ALMEIDA, Bruno. Deaths in prison custody in Brazil. Prisons that kill; deaths that does not matter. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2019, vol.32, n.45, pp.67-90.  Epub Dec 01, 2019. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v32i45.3.

To present an overview of the deaths in prison custody in Brazil, as well as to advance on understandings that point to the punitive and prison trajectory of the country as directed to “kill/let die”, are the objectives of this text. It is premised that the deaths in prison custody are always violent and the responsibility of the State. The data reflect the epistemological and methodological challenges related to an object that is made invisible by the governments themselves. The research is part of the agenda of the Red Cono Sur de Investigación en Cuestión Penitenciaria (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay), which is committed to the scientific unveiling of the penitentiary issue in the region.

Keywords : penitentiary issue; deaths; violence.
