PEREZ CHABANEAU, Lucía e SILVEIRA RIVERO, Patricia. Sociological contributions to think human rights. Inequalities and social justice in Brazil and Uruguay. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2019, vol.32, n.44, pp.81-102. Epub 01-Jun-2019. ISSN 0797-5538. https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v32i44.4.
This article focuses on the relationship between human rights theoretical debate and the ideas of justice, inequality, and recognition, from a sociological field. Despite a distance sociology has maintained with the study of human rights, its reflections on collective identities, social movements, institutions and claims build bridges to the debate on rights. We show democratization and de-democratization processes using different rights examples from Brazil and Uruguay. Although human rights are the foundation of liberal democracies, while pretending to be universal, as they are not carried out homogeneously, its basic principles are questioned and they move away from the defense of human rights.
