Resumen

MANDIOLA, Marcela  y  VARAS, Alejandro. “Educating is governing”: exploring the beginnings of male managerialism in the Chilean academia. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.43, pp.57-78. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v31i43.3.

The article seeks to make sense and analyze Chilean universities considering an historical and gendered approach. Specifically, we propose to explore the birth and consolidation of male managerialism in the Chilean academy by offering a periodization of that historical trajectory during the s. xx and analyzing its construction in the initial period, from the twenties to the fifties. For this, we assume the conception of the historical organizational studies of Maclean, Harvey and Clegg (2016), the concept of hegemonic masculinity offered by Connell (1995) and the critical understanding of the management of Alvesson and Willmott (1996) and Parker (2002). Our analysis shows how the figure of the ‘commercial engineer’ expresses several of the implications of the articulation between managerialism and hegemonic masculinity in the Chilean academy of that time.
