Abstract

ELISSALDE, Roberto. Culture as a field of mirages for the environment: cultural interpretation of reality. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.41, pp.71-86. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v30i41.4.

Culture is everything, from the invention of the machine to the criticism of the machine; It can act as an engine of sustainable development and as a conscious barrier to “extractive and predatory productivism” or can foster endless consumption. The environmental education that teaches to take care of the water and to classify in origin is part of the official culture, but its possibilities of changing the course of the industrial civilization are slim. The relationship between culture and the environment, and its possible influences, will continue to generate mirages until it is accepted that the current state of the environment is a result of our culture.

Keywords : Culture; environment; politics; civil society; consumption.
