CABRERA, Hernán  y  MULLIN, Gastón. Culture, economic growth and wealth distribution: between the egalitarian ethos and poverty condemnation. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.41, pp.55-70. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v30i41.3.

This document aims to examine the discourses accompanying the ideas of economic growth and wealth distribution in Uruguayan society and how those discourses have changed during the last two decades. During the last fourteen years the Uruguayan economy has grown uninterruptedly, entailing more financial security to its citizens, particularly when compared with the turbulent performance of the second half of the twentieth century. In turn, Uruguay has been historically characterized by its egalitarian ethos, which constitutes a distinctive mark of country and remains entrenched through our day. Nevertheless, recent changes in public perceptions regarding poverty, relating it increasingly to individual causes rather than to social ones, cast a shadow of concern over the continuity of this egalitarian ethos.

Palabras clave : Perceptions; values; economic growth; poverty; distribution.
