Abstract

PEREIRA, Gustavo. Democratic culture: the projection of equality. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.41, pp.35-54. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v30i41.2.

One of the many meanings of the term culture refers to the symbolic reproduction of groups, collectives and societies. Within this way of understanding culture, it is possible to restrict it to questions of citizenship, and this can be called a democratic culture. Equality in the Uruguayan democratic culture has played an articulating role and we owe it to the way we have of understanding ourselves as citizens, and also the way in which we conceive development, inequality and poverty. These three topics will be the axis of the explanation that will be developed of the Uruguayan egalitarian culture and especially of its projection into the future. The concept of equal dignity will use both in articulating the space for reflection and in projecting the possible reconfigurations of our egalitarian culture in the future, against the backdrop of public discussion and the processes of interpersonal justification.

Keywords : Equality; dignity; democratic culture; public justification.
