Abstract

PINEIRO, Diego E.  and  CARDEILLAC, Joaquín. Rural population in Uruguay: a contribution to its redefinition. Rev. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.34, pp.53-70. ISSN 0797-5538.

In this paper we discuss the principal ideas and options that have been used in recent literature and in secondary data bases to define and measure rural population in Uruguay. As a result we show that there has been a tendency to accept conceptually and operatively insufficient definitions. This happens in a context in which more and better information is needed to focus public policies. We finally present alternative definitions and measurements of rural population in Uruguay as a contribution to a contemporary debate.

Keywords : Rural population; rural society; methodology.
