Abstract

ALZAGA, Julieta Fernanda  and  ROLLER, Federico. Television and New Screens: Between Technological Determinism and Cultural Practices. Dixit [online]. 2023, vol.37, n.2, pp.123-133.  Epub Dec 01, 2023. ISSN 1688-3497.  https://doi.org/10.22235/d.v37i2.3354.

This article aims to address the relationship between technological determinism and cultural practices within the realm of communication studies. It explores the transition of television from being a symbol of broadcasting to its decline as a dominant medium and the emergence of new screens. To achieve this, we revisit and analyze practices associated with the consumption patterns of fictional television productions and on-demand platforms. Furthermore, we present innovations in technological devices that have, throughout history, altered the behaviors and practices of individuals, as well as the new skills and knowledge of users that influence the platforms. This work concludes that there is an oscillating tension between media and audiences, as well as between technologies and practices. Therefore, certain modifications in the processes of one domain produce changes in the other, and vice versa

Keywords : television; new screens; broadcasting; on demand; uses and practices.
