Abstract

RODRIGUEZ ARECHAVALETA, Carlos Manuel. Press and State in Cuba. Approaches to a Scene in Transition. Dixit [online]. 2021, n.34, pp.30-47.  Epub June 01, 2021. ISSN 0797-3691.  https://doi.org/10.22235/d34.2299.

The article addresses the dynamics of change in current journalism in Cuba, in close connection with the strategies of rearticulation of the ideological hegemony of the State. Based on a documentary investigation, it analyzes the specific conditions of this relationship, given the constant threat from the US government and the values of the regime's socialist ideology. It is essential to address the emergence of independent online journalism linked to the de-professionalization of the socialist press model with a partisan ideological orientation, the policies and conditions of internet access, and the State's control and surveillance strategies. The distinguishing factor seems to be the high contingency, the ideological polarization and the radical confrontation between the State and this emerging model of journalism. However, these new journalistic practices, their culture and perception of roles show a significant revaluation of the partisan ideological press model towards a civic journalism that is contributing significantly to the development of a transnational sphere of contention that enhances deliberation on the Cuban future.

Keywords : journalism; State; Cuba; socialist press; independent online journalism.
