Abstract: We consider, in this research, the conjunctive function of the pluperfect. Our data comes from historical journals of the Institute of Ceará: thirteen from the period of 1944 to 1956 and thirteen from 2000 to 2012. In accordance with functionalist assumptions (modality, markedness and unidirectional change), we show data decrease from one synchrony to another besides contextual narrowing: it survives as a stylistic variant, mainly in counterfact conditionals (protasis-apodosis order) and comparative-conditionals (apodosis-protasis order), affirmative clauses, taking into connective and stative verb (fora), without time reference, in papers and in the first synchrony (1944-1956). NUCLEAR TONAL PATTERNS OF NEUTRAL STATEMENTS AND QUESTIONS IN THE ANGOLAN PORTUGUESE OF LIBOLO http://www.scielo.edu.uy/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2079-312X2020000100033&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Resumo: A partir da abordagem autossegmental e métrica de análise entoacional, descrevemos os padrões tonais nucleares de declarativas e interrogativas (global e parcial) neutras do português angolano do Libolo.
Abstract: Within the Autosegmental-Metrical approach to intonational analysis, we describe the nuclear tonal patterns of neutral statements and (yes/no and wh-) questions in the Angolan Portuguese as spoken in Libolo. Based on semi-spontaneous speech data, we found that statements mainly show a falling nuclear contour and can also be phrased in two intonational phrases, whose non-final nuclear contour is rising. Yes/no questions, which are morphosyntactically identical to statements, exhibit a rising or rising-falling tonal pattern that distinguish that sentence type from statements only prosodically. In turn, wh-questions mostly present the falling tune of statements, and the difference between them is morphosyntactic, in the use of a question word. However, rising patterns are also found for wh-questions, conveying them both morphosyntactic and prosodic marks for interrogation. Regarding other varieties of Portuguese, the nuclear contours of neutral statements and questions in Libolo Portuguese, a variety in contact situation, always match with the prosodic system of Portuguese in general. FORMALIZING LEVELS OF PHONOLOGICAL REPRESENTATION IN THE PRODUCTION AND RECOGNITION OF WORD-MID STOP CODAS IN EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE: A BIDIRECTIONAL ANALYSIS http://www.scielo.edu.uy/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2079-312X2020000100053&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Resumo: O estudo discute a epêntese vocálica no português europeu (PE) em uma abordagem fonético-fonológica.
Abstract: The present study approaches the phenomenon of vowel epenthesis in European Portuguese from a phonetic-phonological approach. By presenting perception and production data, it shows the variability of vowel epenthesis in European Portuguese in word-mid contexts of heterosyllabic consonant clusters (‘p.n’ - apneia, ‘t.n’ - etnia), the study also considers the possible existence of a voiceless epenthetic vowel. The acoustic verification of the production data was carried out with PRAAT (Boersma e Weenink 2013). The instrument used to check the perception of epenthesis in Portuguese was designed on the TP software (Rauber et al. 2009) and applied to the same participants in the production task. Departing from this empirical framework, our aim is to propose a formalization for the vowel epenthesis phenomenon in the bidirectional processing model of L1 - BiPhon (Boersma 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010; Boersma e Hamann 2009), as we assume perception and production to be parts of the same grammar system. HOW CAN I FIND YOU ON FACEBOOK? YOU CAN FIND ME AS...
Abstract: We´ve presented results from a study that aimed, mostly, reflect about the use of creative anthroponyms on Facebook. To support the discussion, we used, as theoretical north, Cognitive Linguistic, dialoguing with authors such as Lakoff (1987), for comprehending that metonymy supports the creation of these anthroponyms. Moreover, considering the interdisciplinary nature of this area, we have brought Bauman (2005), for the discussions, because we understand that liquid modernity also interferes with its use, as we dialogue with Damásio (2011), because we believe that emotions generate them. In the methodological scope, we adopted the qualitative and hermeneutical approach of the corpus, which, for its part, was constituted by anthroponyms collected from said social network. We established three categories of study: Conventional metonymy; Unconventional metonymy and anthroponymy, emotion, identity and liquid times. We conclude, among other results, that metonymy is, in fact, the mechanism that structures this anthroponymy and that women are more prone to its use.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the position of intransitive subjects in Mocovi and Toba (Guaykuruan, Argentina) from the perspective of the syntax-semantics-pragmatics interface. To that end a text corpus from both languages is analyzed looking at the animacy, informational status, and cognitive accessibility of the referents coded as subject. The general results show that in both languages the preverbal position features a restriction favoring animate, given, and high accessibility referents, and disfavoring inanimate, new, and low accessibility ones, which coupled with its low textual frequency suggests this is the marked word order. The postverbal position, in contrast, does not show those restrictions, which along with its greater frequency suggests this is the unmarked order. Lastly, closer inspection reveals that both languages exhibit idiosyncrasies, with the semantic motivation as more influential in Mocovi, and the pragmatic motivation with a dominant role in Toba.
Abstract: This revew-article offers information about the new collection promoted by theAsociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE) with the collaboration of the Fundación José Manuel Lara. The same one, which already has seven published volumes, reproduces classic articles of Hispanic philology, by authors from different Spanish-speaking countries that cover a time span (in terms of their original publication dates) of approximately a century. Each volume is presented and annotated by a specialist, who writes a prologue in which he gives news of the author, his work, his time and the work in question. It is an important initiative aimed at making known some works, perhaps a little forgotten today, but of decisive incidence in further developments of the discipline.
Abstract: This article claims that Ferdinand de Saussure’s Cours de linguistique générale (CLG) could well be treated as a classical book, a category that doesn’t seem to belong to the scientific literature. To support this idea we focus on the concept of transtextuality as was developed by Gerard Genette (1982) and different ways in which it permeates the famous book. By pointing out a representative series of textual relationships inside and outside CLG, the main features of what a classical book is made of comes to the fore.
